Spread Offense

SPREAD (Motion) Offense

| Continunity | Overplay Counters | Dribble Penetration | Back Door Option |

The SPREAD Offense is 3-2 no post, motion offense. Since all five players are involved in the continunity, all players should be skilled passing and handling the basketball. Although, only a couple of basic cuts take place, the key to its success is the players being able to read and counter the defensive over plays.

NOTE: Cutters should anticipate receiving passes late near the basket.

Basic Cuts & Continuity

O1 passes to O2 and cuts to basket. O2 looks to pass to O1 on basketcut or to O3 replacing O1 in the middle. When O1 does not receive a pass from O2, O1 clears to opposite corner.

When O2 passes to O3 breaking into the middle, O2 makes a basket cut. If O2 does not receive a pass from O3, O2 clears to same side corner. O4 replaces O2 on wing.

When O3 receives a pass from O2, O3 assumes a triple threat position and has options to pass to O5 or O4. When O3 passes to O5, O3 cuts to the basket and clears to weakside corner if a pass is not received.

Back Cut Counters

Anytime a player is overplayed, they should back cut to the basket immediately. Do NOT fight defensive pressure.

If/when defender x3 denies or overplays the passing lane to O3 moving into the middle position, O3 should immediately back cut to the basket and anticipate a pass from O2. If a pass is not received O3 clears to same side corner.

If/when defender overplays or denies the pass to the wing, O2 should make a hard back cut to the basket. If O2 does not receive a pass on the back cut, O2 clears out to same side corner.

Dribble Penetration

When receiving a pass it is important for the ball handler to assume a triple threat position and protect the ball.

When the ball handler defender over plays the passing lane, the ball handler has the "Green Light" to drive hard to the basket.

If one of the defenders sag off and help out against the dribble penetration, the ball handler makes a kick out pass and clears out to the opposite corner.

Back Door Option

If a wing is overplayed or when the shot clock is winding down, a corner has option of breaking into the middle and executing a "Back Door" play.

Left Side Entry. If/when defender X5 over plays the passing lane from O3, O1 has the option of breaking into the middle. O3 passes to O1, who in turns feeds O5 on back cut to basket.

Right Side Entry. If/when defender X4 over plays the passing lane from O3, O2 has the option of breaking into the middle. O3 looks to pass to O2, who in turns feeds O4 on back cut to basket.
