Give & Go Spread Offense

| Basic Continuity | Dribble Penetration | Post Help | Weakside Help | Weakside Exchanges |

The "Give & Go" isolation offense basically keeps the ball in the hands and control of your two best ball handlers. Players assume a 2-1-2 spread alignment with the post setting up on the weakside. The Give & Go basket cut is one of the oldest, yet prettiest plays in basketball. If the defender does not take away the passing lane it results in an easy lay up. When the Give & Cut is not available, the passer simply dribbles out and the Give & go basket cut is repeated.

Basic Continunity

Give & Go Cut: Ballhandler O1 passes to O2 and makes a hard cut to the basket. Passer O2 looks to feed O1 cutting to the basket.

When O2 is unable to pass feed O1 on basket cut, O2 dribbles out. O2 passes to O1 breaking out to wing and makes a hard cut to the basket. O1 looks to pass to O2 cutting to the basket. If not open O1 dribbles out and the Give & Go actions is repeated.

Back Cut: Whenever the defender overplays and denies the passing lane to the wing, the wing back cuts to the basket.

Dribble Penetration

When the defender plays soft or lazy on the wings dribble out, the wing can simply turn the corner and drive to the basket.

When the defender tries to cut off the wings dribble out, the wing makes a spin (reverse pivot) or behind the back dribble and drives to the basket.

Post Help

If/when the dribble cannot pass to cutter breaking out to wing or on back cut, the post steps out as a pressure release. O1 passes to post O5 and gets a return pass. Give & Go action continues with O1 passing to wing O2 and making a basket cut.

Whenever the defender cuts off the return pass to O1 from the post, O1 cuts to the basket. Post O5 looks to feed O1 cutting to basket or O2 braking out.

If defender X5 overplays and denies the passing lane to the post or looses vision, post O5 back cuts to the basket.

Weakside Help

If/when ballhandler o1 cannot pass to cutter O2 breaking out to wing or to post O5, O1 looks to pass to O3 and gets a return pass. Give & Go action continues with O1 passing to wing O2 and making a basket cut.

Variation: If o3 and O4 are adept in handling and passing the ball, O3 can elect to pass to O4 to initiate Give & Go action. Post O5 moves across free throw line and sets up weakside.

If O4 cannot feed O3 on basketcut, O4 dribbles out. O4 has option of passing to O3 breaking out to wing to continue the Give & Go action or make a cross court pass to O1.

Weakside Action

Normally, the weakside players are pretty much stationary to avoid fouling; however, if their defenders start to sag off and help out against the Give & Go action there are a couple of things they can do to keep their defenders occuppied.

Exchange: O3 and O4 simply exchange positions.

Down Screen O3 can set a down screen screen for O4.

Back Screen: O4 can set a back screen for O3.

CAUTION: Make sure that screen is set and stationary prior to coming off the screen. Must avoid any moving screen fouls.
